About the S&P500® Index
The Standard & Poor's 500 Index measures the performance of the large-capitalisation sector of the U.S. equity market. It serves as the underlying index for the S&P 500/BARRA Growth and Value Index series. It is a capitalisation-weighted index from a broad range of industries chosen for market size, liquidity, and industry group representation. The component stocks are weighted according to the total market value of their outstanding shares. The impact of a component's price change is proportional to the issue's total market value, which is the share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. These are summed for all 500 stocks and divided by a predetermined base value. The base value for the Index is adjusted to reflect changes in capitalisation resulting from mergers, acquisitions, stock rights, substitutions and other capital events.
